Why Triad Humidity Clogs AC Drain Lines

Your air conditioner is really two appliances in one: a cooler and a dehumidifier. On a muggy Piedmont afternoon, a Greensboro home's AC can pull several gallons of water out of the air — and every drop of it has to leave through the condensate drain line: a small PVC pipe most homeowners never think about until water is dripping through a ceiling.

Why It's Worse Here

Algae and mold thrive in exactly the conditions our summers provide — warm, wet and dark. A drain line that stays wet from May through September is a perfect culture tube, and the slime it grows narrows the pipe until one humid week closes it completely. The water has to go somewhere: onto the drain pan's safety switch if you're lucky, into your ceiling or closet floor if you're not.

Attic air handlers — common in Triad homes — make this the highest-stakes clog in the house, because the first symptom is often a brown stain on the drywall below.

Prevention That Actually Works

• Have the drain line flushed and treated at every spring tune-up
• Watch for water around the indoor unit or a musty smell when the AC runs
• Know where your float safety switch is — if the system shuts off on a humid day, a full drain pan is a prime suspect
• Ask about a drain-line cleanout tee if your system doesn't have one

If water is already where it shouldn't be, shut the system off and call. The line clearing itself is quick and inexpensive — it's the water damage you want to avoid paying for.
